Full course description

Design for Additive Manufacturing

Who is this for?

This course assumes foundational knowledge related to additive manufacturing and computer-aided design (such as having completed the Essentials of Additive Manufacturing microcredential, and Basics of Computer Assisted Design (CAD) microcredential) and an interest in learning design practices for career opportunities in additive manufacturing. A college degree is not required to take this course.

Course Overview

This 4-week course focuses on enabling participants to identify additive manufacturing (AM) processes, materials, and design considerations for various applications. It emphasizes understanding and applying Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) principles, culminating in a practical demonstration of AM and DfAM knowledge through the development and presentation of a case study.

What to Expect

Each week will focus on a different aspect of computer-aided design and additive manufacturing. Weekly modules include interactive exercises, videos that showcase additive processes in action, and assignments to help learners apply their knowledge. Live sessions will offer opportunities for deeper engagement and discussion.

To earn the course’s digital badge, learners must complete all assignments and demonstrate competency in the learning outcomes by achieving a score of 80% or higher on assessments.

While live synchronous sessions are highly recommended for real-time interaction and learning, recordings will be made available for those who are unable to attend due to other responsibilities.

Time Commitment

Learners should anticipate dedicating roughly 15 hours over a 4-week period for this course. Each week, participants will engage in readings, watch instructional videos, complete assignments, and interact live with our faculty experts, averaging about 3-5 hours per week. Additionally, we offer the flexibility to watch recorded sessions with our experts, ensuring optimal convenience for all learners.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this micro-credential you will be able to:

  • Identify AM process/materials/design for different applications
  • Understand and apply DfAM (Design for AM) principles
  • Demonstrate AM and DfAM application through a case-study
