Full course description
Patents for Innovation
Course Overview
This innovation course gives an overview of how engineers can use their technical knowledge in the intellectual property (IP) field. This subject is an intensive introduction to the law of intellectual property, with major emphasis on U.S. patent law. The course also discusses copyrights, provides a brief look at trademarks and trade secrets, presents comparisons of what can and cannot be protected, and what rights the owner does and does not obtain. Additionally, developing patent strategy in the current competitive landscape will be explored, as will acquiring knowledge of commercialization and navigating rules, regulations, and compliance issues that are common with the innovation design process.
In this micro-credential, you will gain the understanding and basics of how patents equip engineers with the knowledge to navigate the legal and technological landscape, foster innovation, protect intellectual property, and enable informed decision-making in their work and projects. Through articles, videos, short readings, knowledge check questions and optional reflection journals, you will build IP knowledge to apply towards situations in which you may find yourself either as an independent inventor looking for coverage for your IP, or as a legal representative for the inventor.
This course is approved for 1.5 CEUs or 15 PEs.
What to Expect
There are three sections to this course and a final culminating assignment in the 4th week. You will need to achieve a score greater than 80% on each quiz and complete all assignments to pass this course and earn the digital badge. For deeper reflection, complete the journal reflections to support application of each concept.
This course includes live synchronous sessions with faculty or professional experts each week. While they are highly beneficial to participate in live, accommodations will be made for those that cannot attend.
